Cub Scout Badges and Placement on the Uniform

One of the most confusing things for a parent of a Cub Scout is figuring out where to put all of those badges.  Please use this guide to ensure that your scout uniform is properly configured.

Cub Scout Patches

Cub Scout patches fall into these basic catagories.  Badges of Identification, Badges of Rank, Badges of Recognition and Badges of Participation.  Once you understand the difference in these, it is much easier to figure out where they go on the uniform.

Badges of Identification: These patches appear on every scout uniform, regardless of unit or rank.  The following badges are included in this catagory: Council Patch, Den Numerals, American Flag and World Crest.  Veteran Unit Bars and Service Stars also fall into this catagory but they are not worn by Pack 219.

Badges of Rank: Badges of Rank identify which den a Cub Scout belongs to. It also identifys the scouts prior ranks in the program.  The following badges are considered Badges of Rank: Bobcat Badge, Tiger Cub Badge, Wolf Badge, Bear Badge, Webelo Badge (both oval and diamond) and the Arrow of Light Award.

Badges of Recognition: Badges of Recognition highlight achievements within the den levels. A scout earns these as he progresses through the yearly program.  These are determined by the effort put forth while working in the handbooks.  These include the Tiger Cub Pocket Totem, Progress Toward Ranks Totem, Gold Arrow Points, Silver Arrow Points, Webelo Colors, Webelo Activity Badges, Compass Points Emblem, Religious Emblems, Miscellaneous Activity Medals.

Badges of Participation: Badges of Participation recognize a scouts involvement with various parts of the scouting program.  These badges include the Cub Scout World Conservation Award, National Pack Summertime Award, Quality Unit Patch, Recruiter Badge and Temporary Insignia.  The Attendance Pin and Bar also falls within this catagory, but is not worn by Pack 219.
